Ngugi wa Thiong’o

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (born January 5, 1938 is a Kenyan author, formerly working in English and now working in Gĩkũyũ. His work includes novels, plays, short stories, essays and scholarship, criticism and children’s literature. He is the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal, Mutiiri. Ngugi went into exile following his release from a Kenyan prison in 1977; living in the United States, he taught at Yale University for some years, and has since also taught at New York University, with a dual professorship in Comparative Literature and Performance Studies, and the University of California, Irvine.

Graça Machel, DBE (born Graça Simbine on 17th October 1945 in Incadine, Gaza Province, Mozambique) is the wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela and the widow of the late Mozambican president Samora Machel, who died in a plane crash over South Africa in 1986. She is the only woman to have been married to the presidents of two different nations, at different times. She is an international advocate for women’s and children’s rights.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (IPA pronunciation: /roli’ɬaɬa/) (born July 18, 1918) was the first President of South Africa to be elected in fully-representative democratic elections.
Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist and leader of the African National Congress (ANC), and was sentenced to life imprisonment for sabotage after he went underground and began the ANC’s armed struggle. He saw his wife only three times over the next 27 years.
